The HBsAg (Hepatitis B surface antigen) screening test is used to detect the presence of the Hepatitis B virus (HBV) in the blood. It identifies whether a person is currently infected with Hepatitis B or is a carrier of the virus, even if they show no symptoms.
To screen for Hepatitis B infection
To identify carriers of the virus
To prevent the spread of Hepatitis B, especially before:
Surgery
Blood donation
Pregnancy
Organ transplant
As part of routine health check-ups in high-risk groups
Sample Required:
A blood sample is collected from a vein.
Fasting Required: ❌
Not required
| Result | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Negative | No HBsAg detected → No current infection |
| Positive | HBsAg detected → Active Hepatitis B infection or carrier state (further testing needed) |
May not detect very early infection (before antigen appears)
Further tests (like HBV DNA, HBeAg, Anti-HBs) are often needed to confirm and assess the stage of infection
