The Vitamin B9 Test measures the level of folate (folic acid) in your blood. Folate is a B-vitamin essential for red blood cell production, DNA synthesis, and proper development of the fetal nervous system during pregnancy.
To detect folate (vitamin B9) deficiency
To evaluate megaloblastic anemia (caused by low folate or B12)
To monitor folate levels in pregnant women or those with malabsorption conditions
To investigate symptoms like:
Fatigue
Pale skin
Mouth sores
Irritability or difficulty concentrating
Sample Required:
A blood sample
Fasting Required:
Fasting for 8–12 hours is recommended.
| Test Type | Normal Range |
|---|---|
| Serum Folate | 3 – 20 ng/mL |
| Red Blood Cell (RBC) Folate | 140 – 628 ng/mL |
| nmol/L (for serum) | 7 – 45 nmol/L |
Low folate levels may indicate:
Poor diet (common in alcoholism or low-vegetable intake)
Malabsorption (e.g., celiac disease, Crohn’s disease)
Increased needs (pregnancy, certain diseases)
Use of certain medications (e.g., methotrexate, anticonvulsants)
High folate levels may result from supplementation; not usually harmful but can mask a B12 deficiency.
